Increasing the Speed of Your Golf Cart
People who own golf carts are always looking for ways to improve upon them. One thing you may notice is that the speed of your cart is rather slow and it might sometimes feel like walking would be faster! Fortunately, there are some ways you can improve the speed and performance of your golf cart to help you save time and get where you’re going more quickly.
The Sports Center in Perry is your Georgia golf cart dealer. Here are some tips for increasing the speed of your golf cart.
How Fast Should You Go?
Bear in mind that golf carts, like any other vehicle, do have a maximum speed limit that shouldn’t be exceeded as it could be dangerous to operate and damaging to the vehicle. The average top speed of a cart designed for golf course usage is about 15 miles per hour. This isn’t a race car speed to be sure, but it’s quicker than walking, especially when you’re hauling your clubs and other gear around with you.
Manufacturers warn that you should not force your golf cart to go any faster than 25 miles per hour. Because of the cart’s high center of gravity and the weight of cargo and passengers, higher speeds could cause it to tip over and you certainly don’t want that!
Getting those extra ten miles can really make a difference, though. How you’ll accomplish this will depend on the type of vehicle you have: gas or electric. Follow the guide below that matches your cart’s power method.
Gas Models
Adjusting or removing the governor on your gas-powered golf cart is the easiest way to increase the cart’s speed. The governor is a device that determines your golf cart’s speed, thus limiting you to the top speed set at the factory when the cart was produced. By limiting how much you’re able to open up your throttle, the governor decreases the amount of air entering your engine. The less air your engine receives, the slower it goes.
If you wish to try another method, either by itself or in combination with removing the governor, you can look at the air filter on your cart instead. If you install an air filter with a higher flow, then you should be able to get more air through your intake system, which will make your golf cart more efficient. You can perform further upgrades, but using these methods should help significantly with increasing your golf cart’s maximum speed.
Electric Models
As for an electric-powered golf cart, you’ll need to take a look at the Shunt system or the Series system when it comes to increasing your speed, depending on which one your golf cart uses.
The Shunt system is what separates your engine from the field circuit. Each of these functions independently, so you should be able to program in speed parameters without any upgrades.
The Series system is a type of all-in-one motor system, so the performance of the overall motor will be hampered by any part that fails. This means you have to upgrade a number of parts on your motor to improve the performance of your cart, including the motor itself, cables, the controller, the solenoid and the forward/reverse switch.
If you remove the parts that restrict power on your electric golf cart, then you should see a power boost. However, removing these parts can be tricky for the uninitiated, so it may be best to talk to a professional mechanic to get assistance with this.
